Pediatricians & Medical Care

Choosing a pediatrician is a practical decision as well as a personal one. Ask each practice whether it is accepting new patients, which hospitals its clinicians use, how after-hours calls are handled, and where the practice directs families when the office is closed.

  The practice provides regular checkups, sick visits, routine vaccinations, screening tests, and management for children with complex health needs.
• Weill Cornell Medicine Primary Care — East Side

  This neighborhood primary-care location lists pediatrics among its clinical services.
• Mount Sinai Doctors — East 85th Street Pediatrics

  The practice provides general pediatrics, including well-child preventive visits and sick care, from birth through young adulthood.

Hospital and emergency care: NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center and Komansky Children’s Hospital are at 525 East 68th Street; the hospital lists 212-746-5454 as its main number and 212-746-5026 for the emergency department. The Mount Sinai Kravis Children’s Hospital Emergency Department, with an entrance at 1468 Madison Avenue at East 101st Street, provides children’s emergency care 24 hours a day, seven days a week; 212-241-7151.

For a non-emergency concern outside office hours, use the pediatrician’s stated after-hours process. Confirm that process when enrolling, including whether a clinician returns calls and which facility the practice uses when an infant needs an in-person evaluation.

Lactation Support & Resources

Feeding support is available by phone, video, at home through eligible city programs, and through hospital-based education. Availability and eligibility differ, so use the linked program pages for current details.

• NYC Breastfeeding Warmline

  The NYC Health Department provides free, confidential phone or video support with a Certified Lactation Counselor. The city lists support in English, Spanish, and Haitian Creole, with interpretation for other languages.
• Mobile Milk

  NYC describes this as a prenatal and postpartum breastfeeding-support text service, with postpartum messages continuing until the baby is four months old.
• NYC New Family Home Visits Initiative
  The city offers in-person or virtual visits by nurses, doulas, or community health workers through several programs. Listed support includes infant feeding and breastfeeding, infant and home safety, safe-sleep education, bonding, child development, and referrals. Call 347-396-7979 to check eligibility.
• NewYork-Presbyterian childbirth and breastfeeding classes
  NYP offers virtual classes to its obstetric patients. Topics may include breastfeeding, postpartum care, and newborn care.
• NewYork-Presbyterian postpartum care
  NYP states that its postpartum units provide breastfeeding, discharge, and mother-baby workshops; its page also links to virtual postpartum groups.
• La Leche League of New York meetings
  La Leche League lists free in-person and virtual meetings for parents interested in breastfeeding, chestfeeding, pumping, and human-milk feeding. Use the current calendar for meeting dates and formats.

Parent Groups & Support

New-parent groups create a regular place to compare experiences, ask questions, and meet other adults in the same stage. The Upper East Side has in-person classes and library programs, while national postpartum organizations provide virtual groups that can be joined from home.

• 96th Street Library

  This fully accessible branch offers family programming that has included baby storytime and open play. Use the current branch calendar for dates.
• Postpartum Support International First-Time Moms group
  A free virtual group for first-time mothers up to 12 months postpartum. PSI lists meetings on the first and third Mondays at 10:30 a.m. Eastern.
• Postpartum Support International peer groups
  Free virtual peer-support groups facilitated by trained peer supporters. The current schedule and group descriptions are published online.

Baby Stores & Essentials

For last-minute diapers, feeding supplies, clothing, or gifts, several Upper East Side stores provide pickup or delivery. Product inventory changes quickly, so check the store’s site or call before making a special trip.

Classes & Education

Parent education can begin before delivery and continue as a baby grows. Current local options include childbirth and breastfeeding education, pediatric CPR and first aid, caregiver-and-infant classes, and introductory swim programs.

• NewYork-Presbyterian virtual childbirth and breastfeeding classes
  Available to NYP obstetric patients. NYP says classes are generally two to six hours and may cover labor and delivery, breastfeeding, postpartum care, and newborn care.
• 92NY Get Ready! Childbirth Express

  An in-person class covering labor stages, when to go to the hospital, birth scenarios, hospital procedures, pain-relief options, breathing, and labor positions.
• 92NY Pediatric CPR/AED/First Aid
  An American Red Cross course covering breathing and cardiac emergencies, choking, injuries, and sudden illness involving infants and children through age 12.
• Asphalt Green Water Explorers
  A free parent-and-child introductory swim program for ages 4–36 months at the Upper East Side campus. One parent or guardian must be in the water.
• Asphalt Green Babies & Toddlers Swim Academy
  Upper East Side classes for infants through age three. Use the program page for current sessions and registration.
• Muse Arts Music Together
  The 2026–2027 schedule lists mixed-age classes for children from birth to age five at Upper East Side locations. Check the schedule for the current location, age range, and registration status.
• Baby Fingers Sign & Song
  The current class schedule lists an Upper East Side Sign & Song class at 215 East 81st Street, using music and American Sign Language with children and caregivers.

Parks & Family-Friendly Spaces

A walk can be the simplest way to get out with a newborn. The neighborhood’s park paths provide flexible stroller routes, while libraries offer indoor destinations and scheduled baby programming when the weather changes.

• Carl Schurz Park
  East End Avenue from East 84th to East 90th Streets
  Entrances are at East 84th, 86th, 87th, and 89th Streets. The park lists wheelchair access at East 84th and East 87th Streets and along John Finley Walk. It includes lawns, paths, and playground areas.
• Ruth and Arthur Smadbeck-Heckscher East Playground
  Central Park, East Side at 79th Street
  Designed for toddlers and preschoolers, with an accessible surface and adaptive swings. The official page notes that there is no restroom at the playground.
• Ancient Playground
  Central Park, East Side at 85th Street
  The playground includes a sandbox, swings, climbing structures, and water features. Its official page lists an accessible surface, ramped play structure, adaptive swings, and wheelchair-accessible restrooms open year-round from 6:30 a.m. to dusk.
